Your privacy is important to us. Lawyers for Climate Justice (“L4CJ”) is committed to maintaining the confidentiality, security and accuracy of your personal information.

We do not sell or disclose your personal information to anyone, except as required by law, to protect our rights and property or in order to fulfill the identified purposes for which we collected the personal information.

This Privacy Policy (the “Policy”) describes the information that L4CJ collects in the normal course of use of its website, how we use that information and to whom L4CJ may disclose that personal information.

Application of Policy

This Policy applies to L4CJ. References in this Policy to L4CJ, “we” “us”, “our”, and similar terms should be interpreted accordingly. The Policy applies to personal information which is collected through the use of L4CJ’s website.

L4CJ is subject to the provisions of the British Columbia Personal Information Protection Act and the federal Personal Protection and Electronic Documents Act and the provisions of this Policy should be interpreted and construed in accordance with those Acts.

L4CJ’s members are lawyers and are subject to regulatory requirements and codes of professional conduct governing the legal profession in the provinces in which they are called. For example, lawyers called in British Columbia are subject to the rules found at: www.lawsociety.bc.ca.

What is personal information?

For the purposes of this Policy, “personal information” means information about an identifiable individual, but does not include your contact information.

Collection and Use of Personal Information

The L4CJ website is hosted by Squarespace. Squarespace collects personal data when you visit this website, including:

  • information about your browser, network and device;

  • web pages you visited prior to coming to this website; and

  • your IP address.

Squarespace needs the data to run this website, and to protect and improve its platform and services. Squarespace analyzes the data in a de-personalized form.

L4CJ will collect your name, address, telephone number, email address and any additional details you choose to provide to us if you complete the relevant forms on our website in order to:

  1. receive our newsletters or other material;

  2. sign a petition; or

  3. take other online action (e.g., register for an event, enter a contest or draw).

We will safeguard this personal information in our database and will use it solely for the purposes noted in this Policy, which include: 

  1. providing you with the requested information or service;

  2. updating you regarding the work of L4CJ and allies, and opportunities to become involved (e.g., newsletters, action alerts, petitions, new publications);

  3. inviting you to upcoming events that may be of interest to you; and

  4. responding to any specific request that you have made.

If you would like to be removed from our mailing list, please email us at info@lawyersforclimatejustice.ca. We will erase personal information that is not being used for the above purposes.

Consent to collect, use and disclose personal information

When you visit this site and access information, you are anonymous. We do not require you to provide personal information to view it.

If you provide personal information to us on this website, we infer this to be your implied consent to the collection, use and disclosure of your personal information in accordance with this Policy. If for any reason you do not agree to the collection, use, disclosure or management of your personal information in accordance with this Policy, you should NOT provide your personal information through this website.

We reserve the right to use or disclose your personal information without your knowledge or consent where we are permitted or required to do so by applicable law, regulation or by applicable rules of professional conduct governing the legal profession.

At any time, you may advise us that you no longer consent to the use or disclosure of the personal information that you have provided for any or all of the identified purposes and, subject to any legal obligations we may have with respect to the information, we shall no longer do so. No lawyer/client relationship

No lawyer/client, advisory or fiduciary relationship is created by this Policy, by your use of the website, or by your communicating with L4CJ or an L4CJ member by email or through this website.

You should consult your lawyer in order to obtain legal advice. L4CJ is not responsible for loss and/or damage that you suffer arising from your taking, or refraining from taking, any action in reliance on information contained on this website.

Email

We also collect your personal information if you send an email to an L4CJ member. We will use this information only for the specific purpose for which you submit the information, e.g., to answer a question that you have asked.

LC4J does not sell or trade email addresses. We use email addresses only to provide you with specific information relevant to us here at L4CJ and our work (which may include collaborations with allies). If you have received email from us and would like to be removed from our mailing list, please email us at info@lawyersforclimatejustice.ca.

Other use of your information

Except as set out in this Policy, we do not make any other use of the personal information which you provide to us unless you have consented to its use for any other purpose, or if we are allowed or required to do so by law.

We use physical, administrative and electronic procedures designed to keep the personal information that we collect about you through our website secure. These means of protecting and maintaining the security of your personal information help to prevent unauthorized access, maintain data security and ensure the appropriate use of your information once we have received it.

While L4CJ takes appropriate safeguards with this website, no website or electronic transmission can be completely secure. Therefore, you should not send confidential or sensitive information over the internet or by email unless you take appropriate precautions, such as encryption.

The L4CJ website is hosted by Squarespace and information inputted into the website is stored by Squarespace in multiple Tier III data centers across the United States. Squarespace serves images and other static assets via multiple geographically distributed content delivery networks (CDNs). By providing your personal information to L4CJ you consent to its inclusion in our database.

How can I access my personal information or ask questions about my personal information?

Subject to the exceptions set out in applicable law, including where required by Lawyer/Client privilege, we will provide you with access to any of your personal information that we have collected, used or disclosed upon written request. We will also advise you to whom that personal information has been disclosed, except where we are permitted or required not to do so by applicable law. We will attempt to make that information available to you in a comprehensible form.

Written requests for access to your personal information, any questions about how your personal information is being used, or any requests to correct your personal information should be sent to our Privacy Officer.

How can I make a complaint about the use of my personal information?

To make a complaint about our management and use of your personal information, please contact our Privacy Officer.  We will acknowledge receipt, clarify the complaint (if required), and investigate and handle the complaint in a fair, impartial, and confidential process.
